Catholic Social Teaching
St John’s Institute for Health was instituted in 1963 with an aim of training nurses for St. Johns Hospital in Mzuzu. Later on, it extended its intake to fit the growing need of health personnel in Mzuzu Diocese. This being the case, the college leadership thought of introducing some new courses like Certificate in Clinical Medicine and Pharmacy Assistants. In all these courses, Catholic Social Teaching is taught. This is done so that we instill in them the Christian values in them.
The Catholic social teaching has a threefold mission:
- Announcing the truth about human dignity and human rights;
- Denouncing unjust situations in our societies;
- Contributing to positive changes in our societies and real human progress.
PRINCILES OF CST:
As a religious Institute, we teach them the Principle of the Catholic Church. Some of them are:
- Preferential Option for the Poor.
As they are being groomed to take care of God’s flock in the ministry of healing, we urge them to be soft hearted and full of love like Christ himself.
- Care for Creation (Laudato Si)
The Principle tries to sensitize the present generation to take a good care of our environment of which man has destroyed. The world is a common home for us all who or which have been created by God.
- Peace
Man has to bring peace into the troubled world. This has to start from our families, workplace, nations then to the entire world. All these stages are to be followed because Life is Sacred,
HOLY MASS
As a Catholic Institute, we conduct mass every fortnight. The aim is to instill in our students the spirit of valuing every person as the image of God. They have to respect the principle of Human dignity. Mass is the summit of our Christian life, and is being attended by everyone at the Institute despite having different denominations. This brings us together as children of same God who aims at continuing the healing ministry of Jesus Christ through us.
