St. John’s Institute for health is one of nine CHAM member training colleges operating within Malawi. It is situated in the northern region city of Mzuzu and operates under Mzuzu Catholic Diocese Health Commission. 

The Institute was established by Sisters of Medical Missionaries of Mary, an Irish congregation that came to Mzuzu Catholic Diocese in the early 1960s on the invitation of the Bishop. It opened in the year 1963 with a group of pursuing a 2-year certificate program in nursing.

in response to needs of people being served by the Malawi health sector, the college commenced 1 year training in midwifery in 1970. This was additional to the nurse training program. Training midwifery went on till the year 1993, after which a 3 year integrated nursing and midwifery training program was introduced with the influence of the Ministry of Health andPopulation.

In the year 2000, on instruction of Ministry of Health and Population, the institute introduced a 2 year training program for nurse technicians. This was however more comprehensive than the certificate nurse training program of 1963 to 1993.

In the year 2004, A diploma in nursing and midwifery technician was introduced, and is the program that is running to date.

The program aims to expose students to all areas of Nursing and Midwifery, and prepares them for service delivery as nurse midwife technicians. Of late, in 2019, the institute commenced an additional certificate course in Pharmacy leading the candidates into Pharmacy assistants. Strategically, the institute envisions commencement of more and higher training programs. Financing of training at the college is mainly done through student’s fees and other resources mobilization strategies

St. John’s Institute exists to promote the healing ministry of Jesus Christ through training of safe and competent health professionals who are empowered to serve their community holistically.

Main Goal? Purpose

In line with the goal of Mzuzu diocese, the purpose of St John’s Institute is to produce professional health care workers for the comprehensive Christ’s healing ministry. 

Catholic and social teachings

St John’s Institute for Health was instituted in 1963 with an aim of training nurses for St. Johns Hospital in Mzuzu. Later on, it extended its intake to fit the growing need of health personnel in Mzuzu Diocese. This being the case, the college leadership thought of introducing some new courses like Certificate in Clinical Medicine and Pharmacy Assistants. In all these courses, Catholic Social Teaching is taught. This is done so that we instill in them the Christian values in them.

Nursing & Midwifery

To develop skilled Nursing and Midwifery professionals equipped with the knowledge, compassion, and expertise necessary to provide high-quality care in disease prevention, health promotion, and patient support. Graduates will also be proficient in utilizing modern health information technologies to enhance patient outcomes and contribute to the advancement of healthcare systems.”

Clinical Medicine

To train Clinical Medicine professionals with the expertise, clinical skills, and ethical values needed to diagnose, treat, and manage a wide range of medical conditions. Graduates will be equipped to apply modern medical practices and leverage health information technologies to support patient care, disease prevention, and the effective management of healthcare systems.

Pharmacy

To prepare Pharmacy professionals with the knowledge, skills, and ethical foundation required to effectively manage pharmaceutical care, support disease prevention, and ensure the safe use of medications. Graduates will also be trained in utilizing information technology to manage pharmaceutical data and contribute to public health initiatives.

Public health

To produce Public Health Technicians who shall be able to apply knowledge, skills and appropriate attitudes in prevention, control, elimination and eradication of diseases, as well as employ information communication technologies for managing health information systems relevant to public health programs.
